Syrah 2017

Zotovich Vineyard

A blend of clone 383 and Alban 1,  2017 was the first crop for this block at Zotovich Vineyard. The clusters were tight and the berries tiny and full of flavors and aromas. The weather was unusual that  year, with a 100º Labor Day Weekend followed by rain and humidity.  The harvest was all about patience, leaving the grapes for a little longer on the vines to finish ripening during the day and hoping for cooler nights during mid-late September. We picked both clones 10 days apart, at the beginning of October.

We fermented and kept both clones separated until bottle to let them express all their potential.  Fermented with natural yeast with the aim of capturing  the maximum expression of the terroir, and no SO2 (sulfur dioxide) was added until bottling.

Our deep, inky colored Syrah has aromas of blueberry, white pepper, spices, violets and a hint of lavender.  It's fresh and vibrant in the palate with silky and soft tannins.  It is a balanced wine with bright acidity and a long, spicy finish.

Grüner Veltliner 2018

Spear Vineyards

The 2018 harvest started later than previous years due to the rains in spring, followed by a cooler than average summer. We picked the grapes for this wine on September 11, on a typical foggy morning in Sta. Rita Hills.

The grapes were foot stomped and left to macerate in our cold room for about six hours prior to pressing.  The fermentation took place with natural yeast, 2/3 of the volume was fermented in neutral French oak and 1/3 in a stainless steel tank. No SO2 was added until bottling.

Our Grüner Veltliner has aromas of pear, green apple, and white floral packed with key lime. In the palate it shows a creamy texture combined with a vibrant freshness and acidity highlighting grapefruit, flint, and white pepper with a lengthy and dry finish. This grüner is a perfect example of a cool climate white wine.

Rosé of Syrah 2018

The 2018 Rosé is made exclusively with Syrah grapes made with saignée method, with almost no skin contact. Fermented in a stainless steel tank with natural yeast,  no SO2 was added until bottling.

Our Rosé has a beautiful pale salmon color. It is a dry and crisp wine with good acidity and creamy texture. It has aromas of strawberries, rose petals, rainier cherries and white peaches with flavors of spice and grapefruit and enough character to be paired with multiple dishes.
